This year, Columbia University‘s LeRoy Neiman Gallery had an installation of A Failed Entertainment, a collection of videos (and two paintings) based on the work of James O. Incandenza from Infinite Jest. I got to see it on my trip to New York this February, and it was pretty dang neat. Some of the videos were really amazing — I liked the “Zero-Gravity Tea Ceremony” quite a bit — and others were, well, less so. But on the whole, it was very awesome and worth going to.
I’m glad to report that the installation is coming to two more galleries next year, one in Virginia and one in Kentucky — and they’re calling for new entries. (I don’t know if that means that they’re starting from scratch, or if they’re merely adding to the collection.) If you’re so inclined, you can download the application and make one of JOI’s films.
…I’ll give you a dollar if you make Infinite Jest V (or VI).
