Review: Kure Kure Takora

dictatoroctupusKure Kure Takora (or Gimme Gimme Octopus, as it’s known in English) is a 1970s Japanese kids’ series of something like 260 short films, each about 3 minutes long, give or take. It’s one of the most surreal things I’ve ever seen on TV. (Kids totally get the best media…)
So, the show. It’s… hard to describe. The title character is an octopus who goes around saying “Kure Kure!” at everything (which means “Gimme Gimme!”/”I want it!”), and his best friend/partner in crime (literally…) is a peanut or a Squash (“Chombo”, I think is his name). Both Takora and Chombo are in love with a weird narwhal thing. Law in their weird little sound-stage village is kept (sorta…) by a badger who’s the sherriff – though, strangely for a kids’ show, Takora and Chombo are usually on the wrong side of the law, stealing from guys who look like they might be Sea Cucumbers?

Tired O’ Tourin: Part 5

Tired O' Tourin!Hi, spuds. I heard that people have been asking about the Tired O’ Tourin’ webcomic that DEVO featured on the ClubDevo website in the early 2000’s. When Michelle and I (The Ladies of the Lake) were introduced to Mark Mothersbaugh at a lecture he gave in Tampa in 1999, he was intrigued when we told him we loved to draw comics…especially DEVO comics! It was one of the ways we survived the drudgery of high school. We created this comic, mailed it to Mutato, and Mark was nice enough to pass our comic along to Jerry, who posted it at the old ClubDevo.com.

Well, Later is Now, and suddenly, Devo is “hip” again- much more a part of the public consciousness (or sub-consciousness) than when we actually drew the comic! Lately there’s been some demand for Devo cartoons, so I hope this gives y’all some Satisfaction.

Things That Are Neat: Octopuses!

I know that some people say the proper plural of “octopus” is “octopi“, but I read somewhere that it’s actually a bad Latin construction and is incorrect, though a lot of dictionaries list it as proper anyway. (The whole prescriptive versus descriptive grammar debate which just gets kind of boring.) But I didn’t actually know that “octopuses” was correct, but there you go.  I guess I have to cross “they’ve got a strange plural-form of the word!” off the list of reasons why octopuses are neat, but at least I learned something, and that’s always good.
