Review: Intermission EP

Intermission

So, we’re stealin’ the idea from the Sparks Project and doing one with probably even more records out there — The Residents!  And this time we’re changing it up a little bit — we’ve got two hardcore Residents fans in me and Rich, but Aila is, at best, a casual fan, who will be hearing about 99% of these records for the first time.  DANGEROUS!  So, enjoy, THE RESIDENTS PROJECT!

The Sparks Project: A Look Back

Sparks in Londen, November 1972; Ronnie Mael, ...

Rev. Syung Myung Me: And thus, the Sparks Project draws to a close.  Or at least a nap that’ll probably be a year or two long, depending on when there’s a new Sparks album.  Admittedly, if I had my druthers, that’d be, say, once every month or two, but I can see where they’d need, y’know, time to make the records.  And what with the Seduction of Ingmar Bergman film with Guy Maddin hopefully becoming a reality, it might be longer — but we might finally get the Mael’s film debut.  Or, at least a non-disaster-film debut.

An Allegedly Fun Game!

A modern pair of prescription glasses with a h...

Image via Wikipedia

So, my glasses broke in two about two weeks ago.  This is not fun when, without them, you’re legally blind.  Trust me on this one.  Anyway, everything’s fine now — I got my new glasses and I can see again.  In the interim, though, my Dad had to come over to fix my glasses, and while he did, I waited on the couch with my iTunes playing for both of us to listen to.  It was kind of fun watching album covers go by and trying to recognize the art from the vague blur that I could see.  So, I put together a little game of identifying these record sleeves from blur-vision; roughly about what I could see without glasses.

Feel free to guess in comments; answers will be posted tomorrow!

HINT:  None of them are Blur.  That’s just a little on the nose.

Interview: Ed Palermo

It’s no secret that I’m a huge, obessive Frank Zappa fan (not that, in my experience, there’s any other kind of Zappa fan). Back around ‘98 or ‘99 I discovered Ed Palermo’s album The Ed Palermo Big Band Plays the Music of Frank Zappa at a Tower Records; I looked at the back and not only did it sound interesting besides (interpretations of the master’s music is always fun), but it had a version of “We Are Not Alone” and “Sofa No. 1”, a couple of my all-time favorite Zappa titles.  The purchase wasn’t exactly a hard decision; as soon as I got home from the record store I listened to it and was blown away that the CD was even better than I thought it would be.  That album is, unfortunately, out of print, but Ed Palermo’s got two other amazing albums of Frank Zappa’s compositions out, 2006’s Take Your Clothes off When You Dance and the brand new Eddy Loves Frank, which, in addition to 7 Zappa songs (including “Night School” and “Dupree’s Paradise”), has a beautiful new arrangement of “America The Beautiful”.  As it turns out, Ed Palermo’s not only a phenomenal arranger, player and composer, but a super-nice guy who agreed to an interview.

Radio & Royalties: An Edgy Argument For The Status Quo

radio

Image via Wikipedia

There’s been a lot of talk lately about performance royalties in terms of radio. The current set up is that webradio has to pay both songwriter and performance royalties, where terrestrial radio only has to pay songwriter royalties via ASCAP, BMI and SESAC licenses. Groups are lobbying Congress to change the rules — in some cases to remove the performance royalty requirement from webradio, and others to add the performance royalty to terrestrial radio.
